Letter: Supports effort to protect neighborhoods from golf course redevelopment

To the editor:
My thanks to our Waccamaw Neck County Council members – Bob Anderson, Clint Elliott and Stella Mercado – for their efforts to protect our neighborhoods from golf course redevelopment.
While the land use plan adopted by County Council last year designates golf courses as very low-density “conservation agriculture” zoning, until the zoning ordinance rewrite is complete (12 to 18 months out) our golf courses could be redeveloped into 10,000-square foot residential lots under the current R-10 zoning.
Thankfully, as a stopgap, County Council agreed at its last meeting to pursue a “neighborhood amenity” zoning district ordinance to apply to golf courses that would preserve green space and protect wetlands and natural features while still allowing other types of recreational amenities. It would prevent any new streets for residential development and limit density to one unit per five acres.
I’m hopeful the approval process for this badly needed ordinance will be swift.
Again, my thanks to our County Council members for working to protect our quality of life.
